Orangeburg, N.Y. – U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam combat veteran Barry Fixler will speak about his new book-with-a-cause, “Semper Cool: One Marine's Fond Memories of Vietnam,” at a free event on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 4 p.m. at Long Island University's Hudson Graduate Center at Rockland. At 5 p.m., the Center will hold an open house for prospective students.
A self-professed patriot, Fixler will donate all of his royalties from the book to wounded U.S. military veterans and their families.
“This is America's book,” Fixler said. “My experiences in Vietnam are in this book, and that makes it sacred to me.”
Publishers Weekly's review of “Semper Cool” said that the book “never sugarcoats the nasty business of war.”
During his military service, Fixler served in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968, and fought on Hill 861-A during the legendary Siege of Khe Sanh. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 1973, he used the G.I. Bill to finance his undergraduate degree from the Gemological Institute of America. Fixler and his wife, Linda, reside in Bardonia, N.Y., where he has a business, Barry's Estate Jewelry.
In 2009, Barry Fixler was named Veteran of the Year by the Rockland County Veterans Coordinating Counsel in recognition of his good citizenship and humanitarian efforts. Long aware of his own good fortune, he has aided not only numerous wounded Marines and soldiers, but also has helped those in need who are unrelated to the military.
Long Island University's Hudson Graduate Center at Rockland, which has been cited by G.I. Jobs as a military friendly school, is located at 70 Route 340, Orangeburg, N.Y.
