Rockland Graduate Campus Offers Unique Continuing Education Classes
Hudson Graduate Center at Rockland,
Long Island University
The new Center for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning at the Rockland Graduate Campus of Long Island University offers adult students a world of career and personal development opportunities.
The programs within the Center, which was started this year, provides advanced, non-credit classes that are intellectually challenging and personally rewarding. They were designed to meet the different, ongoing needs of the individuals in the Hudson Valley region, all with the backing and resources of a major university. Day, evening and weekend classes are available.
“We are committed to lasting learning opportunities for adults and strive to make our classes convenient, informative and inexpensive,” said Ken Reilly, director for the Center for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning.
For those looking to advance in their careers or expand their intellectual horizons, professional and personal development courses in education, business, real estate and career development are offered.
The prestigious Financial Planning Certificate Program, offered in conjunction with the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, was designed for individuals looking to explore financial planning as a career and current financial planners who are seeking CFP Certification (administered by the CFP Board). This program is registered with the Certified Financial Planner(tm) Board of Standards, Inc. and fulfills one of the requirements needed to sit for the CFP exam.
Through a collaborative effort with the New York Real Estate Institute, NYREI will offer its full complement of New York State-approved courses at the Rockland Graduate Campus, allowing students to get their initial real estate license, or take required continuing education courses.
From world-renowned speakers and authors to successful entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 executives, faculty members at the Center are practicing professionals who are at the top of their field.
For those who view learning as a continuing, lifelong process, The Learning Collaborative within the Center is the perfect place to fulfill their scholastic passion. With such classes as Exploring the Cosmos, Adventures in Jazz, Opera Appreciation and Love in Literature, there is something for everyone.
In a unique arrangement, students and teachers work and learn together in a series of high caliber, mentally stimulating courses where the pleasures of learning, not just the materials being taught, are made a priority. Dialogue between students and instructors is encouraged, and throughout the day, opportunities abound for informal intellectual exchanges.
The collaborative, which was modeled after nationwide programs, was designed to fulfill the academic needs of the community, made up of local residents of the lower Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey, retired educators, and self-proclaimed “lifetime learners.”
Over a six-week period, attendees take three classes of their choice from nine offerings. Brown-bag lunchtime sessions include guest speakers. Instructors come from diverse backgrounds, and each brings with them a passion for the area they are teaching.
“If you can imagine it, wonder about it, or aspire to it, we probably teach it,” Reilly said.
