Comparative Religion & Culture - Fall 2011

Course/Field trips you are taking this semester/year:
This year I will be traveling to Taiwan, Thailand, India & Turkey with the Comparative Religion & Culture Program. We will be studying different religions & cultures, comparing them not only to each other, but also to those we are familiar with.

Area of Concentration or Interest:
Gender Issues; especially those related to illegal sex trafficking & sexually based violence.

Favorite Center/Program thus far:
The Comparative Religion & Culture Program.

Most Powerful Experience thus far:
Experiencing the beauty of the people we have been able to meet and the places we have been able to see. For example, listening to an indigenous chief's prayer song while swimming beneath their sacred waterfall.

Why You Chose LIU Global:
I chose LIU Global because I wanted to try something different for my undergraduate education & I had always loved to travel.

More About Magen:
I am 20 years old & during my time at LIU Global, I have lived in Costa Rica, visited Panama & am now currently traveling through South East Asia. In addition to the Gender Issues above, I have also spent a lot of time studying the homosexual & transgender community in Costa Rica as well as a range of topics from progressive food production, primarily Dr. Despommier's Food Towers Model, to the use of small scale hydroelectric power plants.

More About Laurien:
I am 21 years old & enrolled in LIU Global as a Freshman. My educational interests lie in Human Rights, education, cultures, religions & globalization. In my free time I enjoy volunteering, listening to alternative & indie music, going to concerts, spending time with my parents & friends, creating artistic collages & traveling. My favorite country I have traveled to is Thailand as I loved the people, the culture, architecture of the Buddhist temples & of course, Thai food. LIU Global has provided a safe space for me to interact with other people my age with similar interests, travel the world & gain a highly intellectual & hands-on education- I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Hometown: Seattle, WA

Email Address:
carlyhosfordisrael@gmail.com & carly.hosfordisrael@my.liu.edu

How You Learned About LIU Global:
I learned about LIU Global through an information session held at my high school.

Center/Program of Study Currently:
South Africa Independent Study - Fall 2011

Course/Field trips you are taking this semester/year:
This semester I will be teaching photography to students from two local & economically diverse Durban Area high schools in hope that photography, as an artistic & explorative medium, creates a better understand of the ‘other’ by promoting a better understanding of the ’self.” I will also be taking road trips to Cape Town and possibly Mozambique.

Area of Concentration or Interest:
Photographic Community Development; photography as a tool of social change looking at community as the greater global community.

Favorite Center/Program thus far:
My Senior Year Independent Study. Although I find being without other LIU Global students to be lonely at times, the independence that you are given is unmatchable to any other semester with the program.

Most Powerful Experience thus far:
My two-week independent study on spiritual surfing, freshman year at the Costa Rica Center. I learned that the field of academic possibility is endless & that one should pursue unconventional topics for the purpose of surprising themselves with the rewards.

Why You Chose LIU Global:
What I know to be true is that when I squeeze my way into situations that I have never experienced before, my mind loses all prior context and expectations, thus absorbing & retaining all incoming information & knowledge at lightning fast speeds. What more could you want from college?

More About Carly:
I am currently spending my first semester of senior year in Durban, South Africa. Throughout my time with LIU Global I have carried out photo specific projects in La Carpio, Costa Rica, & Durban, South Africa. This is my second semester in Durban, & it is by far one of my favorite places I have ever been to. Overall as I begin my senior year with LIU Global I could not be more content with the choice I made for higher education.

Area of Concentration or Interest:
Environmental Studies & Human Rights.

Favorite Center/Program thus far:
The Costa Rica Center Foundation Year Program!

Most Powerful Experience thus far:
In one year I feel I have had so many powerful experiences. LIU Global has changed me & I'm still discovering how I have changed. One of the most amazing things I have discovered is my passion for dance. Dance is such a part of Latin Culture; I danced for hours during an Afro-Calypso Dance Workshop in Costa Rica. As I result I will continue to dance for the rest of my life.

Why You Chose LIU Global:
I chose LIU Global because I knew it was a unique & no other program existed like it. I wanted to experience the world but not only that, try & understand & immerse myself into different cultures as well. I want to become a more aware individual & learn as much as I can.

More About Olivea:
I am 19 year years old & I love photography, dance & travelling. I've been to Scotland, Iceland, England, Costa Rica, Canada & different parts of the United States which I still want to explore in more depth. I'm now in Taiwan & will go to Thailand very soon with the CRC Program. I love seeing outside my own culture especially since Rhode Island is a small place where you really aren't exposed to a lot. I love seeing & doing as much as I can & LIU Global has helped me do that.

Greta RobisonGreta Robison – LIU Global - Sophomore

Hometown: Bozeman, Montana

Email Address:
gretarobison@gmail.com
& greta.robison@my.liu.edu

How You Learned About LIU Global:
I learned about LIU Global from a high school teacher at The Traveling School.

Center/Program of Study Currently:
Comparative Religion & Culture - Fall 2011

Course/Field trips you are taking this semester/year:
CRC classes will focus on Central Asian religion & culture. We travel through Taiwan, Thailand, India & Turkey over the course of the year visiting everything from sacred temples to a Burmese Refugee Camp.

Area of Concentration or Interest:
Political Sciences, Arts, Photography & Film

Favorite Center/Program thus far:
The Costa Rica Center where we spent our Foundation or Freshman Year exploring Heredia, learning Spanish & taking an extended field study to Panama.

Most Powerful Experience thus far:
You can't pick just one! One of the many would have to be teaching an Art Class to impoverished children in La Carpio, one of the poorest slums in Costa Rica. It is amazing to see how resilient children & their families are, plus it helps you realize how lucky you are & how small your issues are in comparison.

Why You Chose LIU Global:
Originally I chose LIU Global because I wanted to travel, see the world, experience new things & get the real scoop on what is going on in the countries I visited & lived in; not the glazed over, tourist version. I am choosing to stay with LIU Global for all these reasons. However I feel strongly that there is no other program that can support my many interests & goals & realizes how important it is to understand perspectives of other people in other countries. There are a thousand reasons why LIU Global is an amazing school but the greatest one for me is that I know my perspective & opinion of the world, people & myself will change & be broadened every day.

More About Greta:
I started traveling in 8th grade with my school to Mexico but I didn't really fall in love with it until I attended The Traveling School, a Bozeman-based high school. I lived in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras & Mexico before returning for a long year back in Bozeman & joining the ranks of LIU Global. I lived in Costa Rica last year & will be in Thailand, Taiwan, India, & Turkey for the next year. I enjoy foreign films, tourism, Latin America, painting, drawing, playing guitar, writing, & just being creative in general but the bottom line is, I am just a lady who is fascinated by our multifaceted world in more ways than one.
