Visiting Students

Visiting StudentsAlthough LIU Global is a four-year global studies program, students from other US universities, including LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post, are heartily encouraged to study abroad as a visiting student at any of LIU Global's centers for one semester or academic year. Visiting students do not matriculate for a LIU Global degree and return to their home institutions to complete graduation requirements.

Each year about 25% of students at LIU Global come from other colleges and universities and earn LIU Global/Long Island University credit by studying abroad. LIU Global offers visiting students from other colleges and universities a full range of advising and support services, focusing on such issues as program selection, academic planning, registration, credit transfer, cultural adjustment, on-site support, and re-entry.

LIU Global visiting students are required to take the language and area studies courses offered at each center/program. The balance of their coursework is comprised of elective courses, internships and independent study. Visiting students receive a letter grade in each completed course.

Visiting students are advised to talk with their study abroad, academic advisor, registrar and/or financial aid office at their home universities in order to determine the home institution’s requirements with regards to application deadlines, credit transfer, and financial aid procedures. Visiting students will construct a learning plan in consultation with a faculty advisor upon arrival at a LIU Global center. However, if necessary to satisfy requirements at the home institution, visiting students are encouraged to communicate with a faculty advisor in advance of arrival at a LIU Global center.

Visiting students may study at the following centers/program:

Australia (spring only)
China (fall or spring)
Comparative Religion and Culture (fall or spring)
Costa Rica (fall, spring or *summer)
India (fall or spring)

*Summer Program in Costa Rica

LIU Global offers a four-week summer session in Heredia, Costa Rica that allows students the opportunity to earn six credits toward their undergraduate degree. During the month-long stay, students are immersed in the language and culture, combining coursework at the Costa Rica Center field experiences to different parts of the country. Students take a 3-credit intensive Spanish course and live with a Costa Rican family where they practice the language, learn about the culture and make new friends. Students take another 3-credit course that includes both seminars and field trips to different areas within Costa Rica. This allows students to gain an appreciation for the cultural and ecological diversity of the country, as well as an opportunity to see and explore concrete examples of academic issues experientially. In this way, students gain a much more intimate and real life understanding of these issues and concepts.
