Welcome, admitted applicants! Below you will find a list of students who you can contact with questions, to ask for advice, or simply to get a student perspective on the LIU Global program. We have indicated their hometowns, academic interests, and the LIU Global programs they are most interested in, in case you would like to contact someone whose interests match yours, or who is from your home state or even hometown. We hope that communicating with an email buddy will aid you throughout this decision-making process.
Education
Mikaela Houghton
Whitefield, New Hampshire
mikaela.houghton@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
I'm undecided about what I would like to concentrate in, but I'm interested in education and international journalism.
I'm looking equally forward to the next two centers I will be traveling to (either India or the Comparative Religion and Culture Program) and Brooklyn, because I know that at both centers, I will learn an incredible amount and be moved just as much as I have been here at the Costa Rica Center. I'm excited to learn more about what my passions are and be impacted even more by everyone and everything I will experience.
Environmental Studies
Mackenzie Grinnell
Sequim, Washington
mackenzie.grinnell@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
I am interested in environmental studies relating to both people and animals. I am also interested in peace studies.
I am really excited to be in the Comparative Religion and Culture program.
International Studies/Relations
Alex High
Brooklyn, New York
alexandra.high@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
I am interested in international relations, political economics, and film.
I honestly cannot say whether or not I'm more excited for the Comparative Religion and Culture Program (CRC) or the China Program. CRC will be an incredible way to understand several different cultures as well as see how they work together, which is great for my international relations interest. China, on the other hand, is a fascinating world power, which on an economic, political and cultural level will be amazing to study.
Jasmin Kim
Queens, New York
jasmin.kim@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
I have an immense passion for international studies/relations and languages with a healthy dose of interest in human rights, medicine, and art.
I'm still not too sure about where I want to go throughout my years at Global but I am really excited for the Comparative Religion and Culture Program. I think that it would provide the most eclectic learning experience and allow me to make a lot of international connections. Oh, and the food!---I'm a foodie and the fact that I'm going to get to eat food from Taiwan, Thailand, India and Turkey is enough of a reason for me to hop on a plane and go right now. But honestly speaking, I still can't believe this is my life. It has been an incredibly eye-opening and humbling experience; wherever I go I think I'll love it as much as I love Costa Rica. Pura Vida!
Megan Rocke
East Greenwich, Rhode Island
megan.rocke@ my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
My academic interests are foreign relations and negotiations.
I'm looking forward to the Comparative Religion and Culture Program and the China Program to learn about other cultural and diplomatic interactions, languages, and political systems.
Holistic Health
Giovanna Arecchi
San Antonio, Texas
giovanna.arecchi@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
I'm currently interested in holistic health and using natural methods, both physical and spiritual, to prevent and cure illnesses. I can't wait for the Comparative Religion and Culture Program because we will get to travel and explore different cultures, which is what LIU Global is all about!
Human Rights
Andréa Johnson
Chicago, Illinois
andrea.johnson2@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
I'm interested in human rights, environmental rights, and animal rights. I'm also interested in alternative/holistic health, healing and medicine.
I'm looking forward to all of the centers/programs because they all offer so much to learn in each. But mostly, I'm excited about the Comparative Religion and Culture Program and the India Program! I'm obsessed with the Eastern hemisphere and its cultures, religions, and languages, so I can't wait!
Tyler Musgrave
Bowie, Maryland
tyler.musgrave@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
My academic interests are human rights, politics, foreign policy, and diplomacy.
I am really looking forward to the China Program because Mandarin is going to be something very new for me to learn, especially with it being outside the romance language family I have been loyal to all my life. Also, I am pretty excited about the curriculum because it is more focused on language and politics which are right up my alley. Lastly, China is a modern, thriving country but yet it stays so close to its ancient traditions, so the contrast between old and new will be something of excitement for me.
Emily Wilson
Denver, Colorado
emily.wilson@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
Academic Interests: My goal is to learn about world cultures and languages and focus on human rights and social justice, especially children's rights.
I am most looking forward to the Comparative Religion and Culture Program because I will be able to travel to a lot of places, see a lot of things, talk to a lot of people, and experience lots of new things I've never encountered before. I will be completely immersed in the cultures and that will give me loads of hands-on experience!
Humanitarian Work
Clarissa Gordon
West Orange, New Jersey
clarissa.gordon@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
My academic interests are humanitarian work and cross-cultural learning.
I am very excited about the India Center. I've always wanted to go to India because I am in love with the culture, the clothing, and all the beautiful colors!
Languages
Kate Ormiston
McCall, Idaho
katherine.ormiston@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
My academic interests are languages as well as international relations and poverty. My career goal is to work for an international aid organization.
I'm looking forward to the India Center most. Since I've travelled to the country twice already, I can't wait to go back. I fell in love with the people and culture and made friends as well. I also think that in the future, Hindi will be an important language to know and I'm so excited to begin studying there!
Political Science
Laura Peñaranda Currie
Bogotá, Colombia
laura.penarandacurrie@my.liu.edu
Class of 2016
I'm interested in political science and labor justice.
Though each center/program blows my mind in its own way, I'm most looking forward to senior year because I can't wait to be the person I'm slowly becoming. In senior year, everything I'll have done up until that point will be put to the test: my hope is to spend my first semester in Colombia (the second one in Brooklyn) and become involved with political initiatives looking for an alternative to the usual right-wing, militarized rhetoric. I can't wait for the day I board that plane and say to myself, "This is it," and really mean it. Other than senior year, the opportunities offered by the Comparative Religion and Culture Program really interest me.
