Freshman

First-year students attend the Costa Rica Center. The curriculum lays a foundation for LIU Global education as a whole, including a seminar on the theory and practice of experiential learning, introduction to methods for independent study, a two-course sequence linking area studies to global issues, a writing course, intensive language study, and electives. While introductory, the curriculum demands and provides opportunities for first-hand engagement with the local culture, including homestays, field strips, service learning projects, and independent study. Students are also introduced to LIU Global as a learning community, taking positions in student leadership and service and participating with faculty and staff in the organizational life of the college.
