I am pleased to introduce you to LIU Global, an academic unit of Long Island University and a unique program in international higher education. Formerly known as Friends World College, LIU Global students continue a forty-five year tradition of studying the world’s most pressing issues in the world’s most dynamic regions -- but in the context of a cutting edge contemporary curriculum. LIU Global education is a life-altering experience, as can be seen in four distinguishing characteristics:

First, students pursue both cross-cultural and global learning in locations corresponding to dominant regions in today’s global economy including Latin America, India, and China. Field trip and independent study experience in Thailand, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Taiwan and Turkey allows students to extend and refine their cross-cultural skills and further expand their global knowledge. Students are continually exposed to powerful educational experiences in different cultures with different ways of thinking.

Second, LIU Global’s curriculum contains an astonishing array of nationally recognized high-impact educational practices including a first year seminar; learning communities; writing-intensive courses; collaborative assignments and projects; service learning; internships; undergraduate research and capstone projects. These form the foundation of the four year academic program.

Third, LIU Global is a participatory, experiential program where practical, real-life skills are documented in a Co-Curricular Transcript. Supplementing the academic transcript, the Co-Curricular transcript documents learning and specific achievements in four areas: Communication Skills; Work Experience, Internship and Service; Leadership and Teamwork; and Global and Intercultural Skills, giving graduates an incomparable resume and allowing them to stand out in what is now a very competitive job market.

Finally, during their years with LIU Global, students become a part of an intimate world-wide learning community, a caring network of support which sustains and enriches them both during and after their years with LIU Global. LIU Global students don’t just make friends; they make friends for life -- through sharing a series of awe-inspiring and transformative educational experiences rarely available to American undergraduates.
