Who may use the tutoring program?
The tutoring program is geared to help undergraduate students primarily in the Core Curriculum and other introductory courses. Tutors may also be able to help with some advanced classes within a specific area of study.
What subjects and classes can tutors help me with?
Tutors are hired based on student demand for assistance in a particular subject area. Thus the dynamics of our tutoring staff may vary from semester to semester. In general tutors are available for many of the core areas of study including: math, English, philosophy, psychology, history, political science, biology, economics and accounting. Additional assistance may be available in criminal justice, statistics, and education courses.
Where and when can I find a Tutor?
Tutoring is available at the Learning Support Center located in east wing on the lower level of Post Hall. Tutors are available Monday through Thursday between 12 p.m. - 7 p.m. and on Friday by appointment only. Do I need to make an appointment?
No. Though an appointment is not necessary it is highly recommended. Walk-in students are served on a first-come, first-helped basis. Thus it may be necessary to wait a while if many students want to see the same tutors. However, students who call ahead, or who have made a confirmed appointment to meet with a tutor will have priority for the requested time slot. How long is each tutoring session?
The tutoring program offers some degree of flexibility. Though the average session may last between 45 minutes to an hour, some students may need less or a little more time. If you require more time with a tutor, please speak with the tutor to see how best your needs may be accommodated.
What sort of problems can the tutors help with?
Tutors can help with homework problems, paper-writing and exam preparation for courses in their subject area. Tutors are also trained to provide assistance with study skills, time management and note-taking.
What should I bring with me to my tutoring session?
It is important that students recognize that tutors are not the source of knowledge. The tutor’s role is to help to facilitate the learning process. Students must therefore take all necessary resources to each session. These include course syllabus, textbooks, class notes, pencils, paper, calculator, written assignment, the professor’s recommendation or instructions for the assignment, a copy of a graded assignment handed back by the professor, etc. You must bring with you any material that may be useful in assisting the tutor to assist you.
