Loomings
Loomings is an annually published, full-color magazine featuring the creative talents of C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University students. All undergraduate and graduate majors at C.W. Post are eligible and encouraged to submit their work. Loomings accepts a variety of visual and literary work of all styles and skill levels. Submissions are due every March.
History
In the mid-60s, students and faculty in the English Department at the C.W. Post College of Liberal Arts and Sciences started a literary magazine for members of the community to share their creative writing talents. Loomings - which takes its name from an idea found in the novel Moby-Dick that events, thoughts and ideas often loom ahead - would become a showcase for students to share poetry, fiction and nonfiction work. The magazine's first advisor was Dan Levin, an accomplished author and professor of creative writing.
In 1981 Professor Levin left C.W. Post to study in Korea as a Fulbright scholar and Professor William Fahey took over as advisor. As more and more students began submitting photography and artwork to the magazine, Loomings found a new home as part of the School of Visual and Performing Arts.
Today, Loomings is a full-color, annual publication that promotes and encourages the creative efforts of the students of C.W. Post in the literary and visual arts. It also serves as a training ground for students who might be interested in pursuing careers in editing, publishing, graphic design, advertising, and any other aspect of the collaborative creative process. All undergraduate and graduate students at C.W. Post are encouraged to only submit work to the magazine, but also to work on it. Staff members in areas such as design and layout, as well as poetry, fiction, art, and photography, are always needed. No prior experience is necessary. Submissions are due every March.
