The Steinberg Museum of Art, located on the second floor of Hillwood Commons, consistently provides an environment that encourages exploration of the visual arts. The museum supports the broader cultural and educational mission of LIU and the community.
The Steinberg Museum of Art is the caretaker of LIU’s Permanent Art Collection since the early 1970s. Over the last three decades, more than 650 new works have entered the collection through gifts and donations.
We are pleased to welcome the new addition of wood, textile, and ceramic works of art from Africa to the Permanent Collection, which were gifted by Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert Graham, and join a collection that includes works from ancient China, Egypt, and the Near East.
In addition, we have included ceramic works of art from the Han dynasty of China, gifted by Dr. Alfredo Garcia, and join a collection that includes other works from the Ming as well as Han dynasties.
The Steinberg Museum of Art offers a variety of educational programs from September 2014 to May 2015.
Early Childhood Program: This one-hour, developmentally appropriate program is designed to introduce young children (K -2nd grade) to the museum while building both visual and verbal literacy skills. Children will participate in stories and creative activities surrounding a range of artwork, and will experiment with artistic materials as they practice looking, listening, and describing.
NOTE: Group size must be limited to 20 students.
Programs for grades 3 to 12: These two-hour experiences incorporate age appropriate discussions, museum activities, and a hands-on art project. Educators can schedule a tour based on our current exhibitions or can structure a customized visit utilizing objects from our collection. Prior to the visit, participating educators receive a Curriculum Resource Guide with information, reproducible handouts, and lesson plans.
NOTE: Group size must be limited to 30 students.
The fee for each program is $85 per class. Reservations for visits may be made by calling 516-299-2782. Payment is due two weeks prior to the day of your visit.
