Flu Safety Information
The New York State Department of Health has reported a sharp increase in the incidence of influenza in the state. Long Island and NYC are included in the areas where increases have been reported. Symptoms of flu may include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and some people may experience vomiting and diarrhea. The flu may also cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.
What can I do to protect myself from getting ill?
The NYS Department of Health recommends that everyone 6 months of age or older be immunized for seasonal flu. Immunizations are available at the LIU Post Medical Services Department.
There are also everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these steps to protect your health:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you get sick with influenza, the Center for Disease Control recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Faculty and staff experiencing symptoms should seek immediate medical attention from their family doctor. Students should contact their family physicians, or the Medical Services Department, at (516) 299-2345.
