Technology Requirements

Online courses at Long Island University involve extensive interaction with technology that is supported by the Internet. In order to have the best possible online learning experience, your computer or laptop must meet certain minimum hardware and software requirements. Additionally, students must have course-specific hardware and software as indicated below.

Computer Skills:

Students are expected to be proficient and able to perform basic computer functions including e-mail, internet browsing, download/installation of software, word processing, file saving, file management, and backup.
PC/Mac Hardware Requirements:
- 1GB of RAM
- 20 GB of Available Hard Disk Space
- Broadband Access (Cable Modem/DSL)
Required Software for all courses:
- Microsoft Office 2007 or greater (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Acrobat Reader (to read .PDF documents) - Free Download

Required Plug-ins for all courses:
- Adobe Flash Player - Free Download (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/)

Requirements for Introduction to GIS (GIS 501):
- Windows Vista / 7 (PC)
- ArcGIS 10.0 or greater (ArcGIS student license instructions)

Requirements for Introduction to Computer Programming (GIS 502):
- Windows Vista / 7 (PC) or Mac OSX 10.7 or greater (Mac)
- IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition (http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/) for PC users

Required Software for Mobile Geographic Application Development for iOS (GIS 503):

• Mac OSX 10.7 or greater
• XCode (http://developer.apple.com/xcode/)
  

Required Software for Mobile Geographic Application Development for Android (GIS 504)

• Windows Vista / 7 (PC)  or Mac OSX 10.7 or greater (Mac)
• IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition (http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/)
• Android SDK (http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html)
• JDK (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html)
  

Geographic Web Application Development (GIS 505)

• Windows Vista / 7 (PC)  or Mac OSX 10.7 or greater (Mac)
  

Recommended Software:

• Firefox Browser (PC/Mac) 4.0 or greater - Free Download
• Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/)-
• Komodo Edit (http://www.activestate.com/komodo-edit)

Recommended Devices:
- iPhone, iPad with in-built GPS for real deployment on device
- Android phone with in-built GPS for real deployment on device
