Advance Certificate in Students with Disabilities - Generalist (Grade 7-12)

LIU Post’s 15-credit advanced certificate is designed for current teachers who wish to develop instructional strategies for special needs students in grades 7 to 12. The program emphasizes inclusive classroom management, types of emotional and physical behavior problems, resource room design, and effective assessment. Courses take into consideration all types of disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, speech and language delay and ADD/ADHD. The program fulfills the course requirements for New York State certification as a Secondary Special Education Content Area Specialist. A state examination is required for certification.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment in special education is expected to grow by 17 percent through 2020 thanks to earlier diagnosis of learning disabilities.
