B.S. in Adolescence Education: Italian (Grades 7 - 12)
The Bachelor of Science program in Adolescence Education: Italian at LIU Post prepares a new generation of Italian teachers to cultivate and enhance student success in Italian language and culture. This program equips you with the skills, knowledge and foundation to motivate middle and high school students at various skill levels to learn the fundamentals of language comprehension, vocabulary and linguistic expression through oral and written skills. The program includes supervised practice teaching in actual classrooms at two grade levels (7 to 9 and 10 to 12), allowing you to observe licensed teachers and interact with the teenage student population.
After you complete the degree requirements and successfully pass all licensure tests (LAST, ATS-W and CSTs), you will be awarded Initial Teaching Certification by the New York State Department of Education to teach Italian to grades 7 to 12.
The Bachelor of Science in Adolescence Education: Italian is a joint program between LIU Post’s College of Education, Information and Technology and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The teacher-education programs in LIU Post's Department of Curriculum and Instruction are nationally accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), ensuring you receive the highest quality instruction.
To prepare you for the classroom environment, your coursework will emphasize mastery of content in foreign languages, effective teaching techniques, innovative lesson planning, motivation strategies and student assessment. Your education classes will examine ways that you can use your knowledge to teach Italian effectively to young students to maximize learning outcomes. You will learn how to understand the intellectual, physical and emotional development of teenagers; to encourage peer cooperation and collaboration; to foster student self-esteem and moral development; and to empower parents. You will explore issues of race, ethnicity and gender in secondary education for both the general adolescence population and at-risk students. You will learn how to assist a young person in developing the skills to achieve language comprehension and to develop a lifelong enthusiasm for knowledge and learning. LIU Post teacher education students enjoy close personal contact with faculty who are dedicated to mentoring the next generation of highly skilled teachers.
As an Italian education major, you will be prepared to guide young people through the practical knowledge of the Italian language and a deeper appreciation of Italian culture. You will examine the literary, geographical, intellectual, political and aesthetic developments of Northern Italy and the Italian Peninsula from medieval times through the 20th century. You will have an opportunity to take an in-depth look at three early Italian masters: Dante, Petrarca (Petrarch) and Boccaccio, and to explore the historical, social and economic forces that underpin contemporary Italian society, including the role that regional differences play in shaping national character. With a thorough grounding in Italian grammar and syntax and the close study of characteristic texts, you will learn how to communicate to students the fundamental concepts of reading, writing, listening and speaking in Italian.
