Nana Koch, Ed.D, is an Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Movement Science. Her areas of specialization include curriculum design, physical education methods, dance and dance/movement therapy. She is dedicated to teaching pre-service teachers in the department how to use movement as a tool that enhances the learning process and promotes physical literacy, skill proficiency and practices that lead to fitness and health. She is also the department edTPA coordinator, teaching seminars that prepare students for the new certification exams.
In addition to her responsibilities at LIU Post, Dr. Koch consults with school districts and gives keynotes at conferences aimed at decreasing obesity and increasing physical activity and healthy nutritional practices in the schools
For six years Dr. Koch was a consultant to the Rockland County Health Department and the Rockland Teachers’ Center Institute. With a grant funded by Steps to a HealthierNY, she worked with these organizations to create Learning in Motion, a professional development program for K-12 teachers focused on teaching them how to integrate physical activity into lessons in academic subject areas in the Common Core. Here she also served as the lead teacher, promoting the research findings indicating that fit students do better academically.
Dr. Koch is a Certified Movement Analyst, Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist and Licensed Creative Arts Therapist in New York State. She utilizes her expertise in these areas to teach the dance therapy module in the newly created Creative Arts Therapy course taught in the Art Therapy Program at Post.
In the international arena, Dr. Koch has given seminars and workshops at the Pan American School in San Jose, Costa Rica that have provided its K-12 teachers with ways to include physical activity into their lessons to keep their students fit and focused. In Pune, India, she worked with those who sought to increase their personal awareness of self through movement experiences. Last summer and this coming, she was invited to teach courses on dance/movement therapy and group process in Beijing, China to groups of dancers, teachers, social workers and human resource specialists.

- My presentation, entitled: “Learning in Motion: An innovative School Health Promotion Program”, was accepted by the Oxford Round Table for presentation in their March 9-14, 2008 forum on public policy. The theme for this conference was Obesity: The Affluent Society and the Quest for Treatment.

- In April, 2007, I was chosen by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, in conjunction with the State Education Department, as one of 100 turnkey trainers throughout New York State to train professional physical educators on how to use the PE Profile. The Profile is an assessment instrument for high school students to determine their performance in, among others, physical fitness, skill acquisition, and their strategic knowledge of sports. On June 8 & 9, I participated in the Regional Staff Development Training that taught us how to rollout the PE Profile.

I was a panelist, along with pedagogy and field professors from four-year New York State colleges and universities offering health and physical education programs. The workshop’s title: “Cooperating Teachers, Shaping Our Future.” Two PowerPoint presentations were presented. The first was focused on the unique qualities of our department’s field programs. The second was on service learning during student teaching.

- Child Care Resources of Rockland, Inc. “Get Up and Move: Exercise, the Brain and Learning” is the presentation/workshop designed to teach child care workers why physical activity is essential to the health of the child’s brain, body and emotions.

- American University, Washington, D.C. “Art in the Classroom” was the topic discussed with master’s level students in Arts and Community, a 3-credit graduate course in the university’s Arts Management Program. The focus was on case studies of three arts program collaborations involving public schools and established arts organizations in the New York metropolitan area.
- “The 3Rs in Motion” Thispeer-reviewed presentation was given at Choreographing Collaboration, a joint conference of the American Dance Therapy Association and the National Dance Education Organization, held October 18-22 in Long Beach, California. “The 3Rs in Motion” was published in the conference proceedings.
- New City Library, New City, New York. “Move and Stay Fit: Move It to Lost It.”This participation workshop, which was designed for parents, provided a variety of physical activities that parents can perform with their children at home and in the community to help everyone in the family stay in shape.

Performed in the May 14, 2004 showing of “Grazed by a Comet.” This dance, choreographed by Susan Cherniak, was part of the 2004 Dance Connection: Choreography Showcase at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey.
