Description

Jan P. Hammond, Ed.D. joined the LIU Post faculty in January 2011 as a visiting professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Administration. In September 2011, Dr. Hammond became a full-time faculty of DELA and also a member on the Executive Committee of the new Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program that is housed in the School of Education, Information, and Technology. 

A former school building and school district leader as well as the former Chair of Educational Administration at SUNY New Paltz, Dr. Hammond brings practical experience and academic prowess to Post. Her skills in institutional accreditation and her active participation in leading educational associations across the state helped her develop strong networking links. Dr. Hammond is also a member of the New York State Education Department Professional Standards and Practices Board, an advisory board to the New York State Board of Regents.

Dr. Hammond has been an educational consultant to school districts and educational organizations, mainly in New York State and India. She has traveled to 22 states and 25 countries to visit schools and research educational best practices in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), Multi-age Classrooms, Year-Round Schools, School Choice, Career Ladders, Advanced Math, Differentiated Instruction, Technology in Classrooms, Block and Flexible Scheduling, Strategic Planning, Accelerated Curriculum, Chicago Math, HOTS Remedial Math Program, SQRI, Elementary Foreign Language, Multi-Sensory Learning, Learning Styles, Values/Citizenship in the Classroom, Teacher Evaluation, Educational Technology, Dimensions of Learning, ESL, Science Laboratories, and Alternative Education.

1997    Awarded "Barbara Mason Outstanding Female Administrator of the Year," with lifetime membership and plaque.

Led Blue Ribbon School of Excellence team for Tuxedo Elementary School

Awarded the New York State School of Excellence recognition.

Honored with plaque by the Tuxedo Board of Education Plaque for leading a team of teachers, parents, and administrators who were selected to present exemplar curricula that supported the new NYS English Language Arts Standards.

1993    Honored to present dissertation at Alumni Day at Teachers College, Columbia University.  Topic:  The Perils and Promises of School Choice.

1992    Awarded "Excellence in Administration" by the Mid-Hudson School Study Council and presented by Commissioner Thomas Sobol.

1991     Led Teachers College's doctoral cohort to ensure successful dissertation defenses.

Received financial support from Teachers College to present paper at U.S. Global Competitiveness in Education Conference.

Received Dean's Award Scholarship from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Wrote IBM competitive technology grant; selected as one of five outstanding finalist whose school districts were rewarded with special technology and training.

1989    Awarded plaque by North Salem Board of Education for outstanding service and dedication to the students and for creating an exemplary high school music program.

1988    Middle States Accreditation Committee.  Onsite review team – New Hyde Park UFSD. Responsibilities included reviewing finance, facilities planning, personnel, and administration. 

1987    Middle States Accreditation Committee.  On-site review team – Pleasantville UFSD.  Responsibilities included reviewing finance, facilities planning, music, and English department.

On Blue Ribbon Panel at North Salem High School and Middle School, NY.  Both the high school and middle school won the honored Blue Ribbon School award the following years.

Awarded the Phi Lambda Theta "Most Innovative Curriculum Award" and the top prize honorarium for developing innovative curriculum at the middle/high school level.

1986    Led award-winning Technology workshops at Putnam-Westchester BOCES, local schools, and state technology fair.

Teacher Center SED Grant approved.  Invited to serve on the first BOCES School Technology Board at Putnam-Westchester BOCES.  Monthly meetings allowed the twenty members from two counties to set technology standards, review and evaluate hardware and software.

Awarded the first commendation plaque given by the North Salem Board of Education for leadership and devotion on the occasion of choral performances in London and Oxford, England.

Awarded the key to the city from Oxford, England for conducting young American choral group from North Salem High School.

Honored for outstanding teaching with plaque from McDonalds' Corporation.

Awarded a "Mini Grant" from Westchester County that supported a state of the art, fully computerized, sound recording studio for classroom.

Fulbright Recipient, Teachers Exchange Program, Dept. of Education, United States Government.
