Women’s Lacrosse Repeats As ECC Champions with 7-6 Win Over Dowling
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 7, 2016) - On Saturday, the No. 5/8 and second-seeded LIU Post women's lacrosse team captured its second-consecutive East Coast Conference title, defeating No. 9 and top-seeded Dowling College by a 7-6 final at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
It marked the third-straight year that the Pioneers (16-3) and Golden Lions (16-3) faced off for the league championship. They split the last two meetings, with LIU Post pulling out an 11-6 victory in 2015.
Tied 2-2 late in the opening period, freshman midfielder Trish Brisotti (Mattituck, N.Y.) netted her second goal of the half to send the Pioneers into the break with a 3-2 advantage. The tally came just 17 seconds after the Golden Lions had tied it.
Less than three minutes into the latter session, junior attacker Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) found the back of the cage, widening LIU Post's cushion to 4-2.
The green and gold eventually built as much as a 6-3 lead at the 15:09 mark, on a free-position goal by junior attacker Connor Bird (Syosset, N.Y.).
Dowling fought back though and later closed the gap to 7-6 in the final minute. However, Bird won the ensuing draw control to seal the win for LIU Post.
Between the pipes, sophomore goalie Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made six saves for the Pioneers. She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the ECC Tournament, after stopping 14 shots in the two postseason contests.
LIU Post held a 23-15 edge in shots and owned a favorable 11-4 margin in draw controls. It was also 14-of-17 (82.3 percent) on clears and forced 10 Dowling turnovers.
Head Coach Meghan McNamara and the Pioneers now await word on a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Championship. The selection show will be aired live on Sunday (May 8) at 8 p.m. on NCAA.com. You can view it by clicking here.
