Out of 247 Division II schools across the country, LIU Post was slotted 10th in the final 2013-14 NACDA Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, released Wednesday, June 4.
It is the Pioneers' highest ranking since placing sixth in the last poll of the fall season on Dec. 24. The “green and gold” also finished well above their East Coast Conference foes (Bridgeport was the second closest ranking 68th), marking that feat for the fourth consecutive year.
LIU Post sat atop of the entire East Region as well. Local and Northeast-10 Conference rival Adelphi ran second to the Pioneers, sporting a 484-point total.
LIU Post racked up 218 points in the spring 2014 campaign. It amassed 90 points as a result of the men's lacrosse team's appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship, 73 points for the softball team's capture of the East Region crown, and 55 points for the women's lacrosse team's bid to the national semifinals.
In all, the Pioneers accumulated 575 points. Ten programs advanced to NCAA Division II Championships (two to the national title game), eight were nationally ranked and seven captured their respective conference championship crowns. Additionally, sophomore swimmer Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) repeated as national champion in the 200-yard butterfly after clocking a school-record 1:58.91 in the event.
"It has been a tremendous year for LIU Post athletics," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Bryan Collins. "We are extremely proud of what our athletes have accomplished on the playing field and in the classroom. I would like to thank the contributions of our administration, coaches, and most importantly, student-athletes, for making us the premier Division II program in the northeast."
