forensicsMore than 500 Long Island high school students will use forensic science techniques to crack a case in a mock crime science competition at the Forensics World/LIU Post CSI Challenge on Friday, April 11, at LIU Post.

Sponsored by Forensics World and the Departments of Forensic Science and Chemistry in the LIU Post College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, budding forensic scientists and crime fighters will compete for first, second, and third place trophies by solving a murder mystery, gathering and analyzing physical evidence, interviewing and interrogating suspects, and presenting their findings and theories to a mock court.

Actors portraying a cast of suspicious characters bring the murder-mystery to life by interacting with the competitors. Members of the school teams act as police officers, crime scene technicians, homicide detectives, forensic scientists, and prosecutors. Contestants are thoroughly evaluated and critiqued throughout the competition by police officers, detectives, forensic scientists, and prosecutors who utilize a comprehensive scoring system to determine how well each school manages its criminal investigation.

“This is an experiential learning opportunity for students interested in careers in forensic science and criminal justice to work with expert forensic scientists and law enforcement to examine and study evidence in a professional setting,” said Dr. Katherine Hill-Miller, dean of LIU Post’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pratt Recreation Center.

LIU Post’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers the B.S. in Forensic Science and the B.S., M.S., and accelerated B.S./M.A. in Criminal Justice.
