Brookville, N.Y. – A new phase in student entrepreneurship begins at Long Island University (LIU) Nov. 12 with the opening of The Student Body, the first student-run business on any LIU campus. Offering clothing and accessories for men and women, the venture marks the university’s commitment to empowering students through real-world experience as they manage, market and advertise their business to students, faculty, staff and other members of the LIU Post community in Brookville, N.Y. Located on the second floor of Hillwood Commons, the clothing boutique’s store hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays.
Items for sale include jackets, gloves, shirts and other apparel. Students purchase inventory at wholesale in New York City. Profits from The Student Body will go to supporting LIU scholarships as well as upcoming student-run enterprises.
The main purpose of this business is to give students those one or two years of business experience that employers are looking for,” said Tamir Dayya, project coordinator/manager for The Student Body and recent LIU Post graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. “When they can say that they helped run a business and made executive-level decisions about things like marketing, management, publicity and selecting inventory, they’re more attractive to employers after they graduate.
The Student Body had a soft opening Nov. 1 and will have its official opening this Tuesday, Nov. 12. The business will employ approximately 15 students in part-time capacities, with roles ranging from sales associate to management.
