Miguel is known for his smooth yet eclectic R&B/ Neo-soul sound, drawing on a wide spectrum of nostalgic influences; this is made apparent in funkadelic grooves reminiscent of Prince, to soulful smoothness that’s often compared to Babyface and Marvin Gaye, and vocals that harken to a surprising bevy of classic rock influences including Queen, The Beatles, Van Morrison and Def Leppard. Miguel’s singles include “All I Want is You,” “Sure Thing,” “Quickie,” “Girls Like You,” “Adorn,” and “Do You…” He has also been featured on singles such as “Lotus Flower Bomb” by Wale, “Pride n Joy” by Fat Joe, and “Power Trip” by J. Cole.
Though new to the scene, Miguel has already accrued accolades as a fresh sound in R&B, earning the 2013 Grammy for “Best R&B Song.” He was nominated in several other categories at this year’s Grammys including “Song of the Year,” “Best Rap Song,” “Best R&B Performance,” and “Best Urban Contemporary Album.” Since his debut in 2010 with the sleeper-hit album “All I Want Is You,” Miguel has earned numerous nominations for American Music Awards, BET Awards, Grammy Awards, World Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards. Last year, he and hip hop artist Wale won a BET Award for “Best Collaboration” on the track “Lotus Flower Bomb.”
Miguel released his sophomore album “Kaleidoscope Dream” in September 2012 to critical acclaim and commercial success. He is soon to complete his 2013 tour with Alicia Keys which began in January with dates in Europe and has since brought him to major stadiums throughout the United States. Keys guests on the “Kaleidoscope Dream” track “Where’s the Fun in Forever.”
The annual Spring Fling concert, sponsored by the Association for Campus Programming (ACP), is an event that brings world-class performers selected by the student body to perform at LIU Post in the Spring Semester. Last year’s Spring Fling featured Ludacris, who brought the house down with his Dirty South rap. All ticket proceeds go to the It Takes a Village book scholarship, which provides textbook vouchers to LIU Post students experiencing economic hardship.
Doors open at 7 p.m.; show starts at 8 p.m. LIU Post (formerly the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University) is located at 720 Northern Blvd., Brookville, NY, 11548. For more information, call the Tilles Center Box Office Monday through Saturday between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at (516) 299-3100.
