Brookville, N.Y. – New dual-degree programs that combine exceptional undergraduate arts education with elite graduate degrees in business or public administration, in a five-year format that saves significant time and cost, will begin at LIU Post in September 2013.
Graduates of the new programs will hold the Bachelor of Fine Arts in arts management and the Master of Business Administration or the Master of Public Administration – credentials that will give them a significant advantage in the exciting but competitive world of arts management.
"Students in these programs will possess an extraordinary combination of training in the arts and management knowledge that will be highly valued in the arts and entertainment industry," said Noel Zahler, dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at LIU Post. "Earning both the BFA and the master's degree in just five years, instead of the traditional six years, will save money and enable graduates to begin their careers that much sooner."
Andrew Rosman, dean of the College of Management at LIU Post, said, "Graduates of these innovative dual degree programs will themselves be trained artists, and they will also have the business and managerial skills to connect artists with audiences."
No other college or university in the New York metro area offers a five-year BFA in arts management/MBA or MPA program. The dual degrees are offered jointly by the School of Visual and Performing Arts and the College of Management.
The LIU Post BFA in arts management provides competency in the fine arts with a solid foundation in business or public administration. It includes concentrations in visual arts, music, theater and dance that feature history and theory classes as well as internships on and off-campus. Students have been placed at DreamWorks Theatrical Productions, Stomp, SONY Music, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Parsons Dance, Nassau Coliseum, Island Def Jam Recordings, Heckscher Museum, and other venues in the New York City metropolitan area.
All concentrations of the BFA in arts management include courses in accounting, economics, management, marketing, law, and public relations, communications, public speaking and computer graphics.
The LIU Post MBA is accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, a distinction shared by fewer than 5 percent of business schools worldwide. The LIU Post MPA is the one on Long Island to hold the prestigious accreditation of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. The College of Management has been ranked among the nation's best 300 business schools for 10 consecutive years by The Princeton Review.
Details on the BFA/MBA and BFA/MPA are available from Robert Wildman, director of the BFA in arts management, at (516) 299-2353 or Robert.Wildman@liu.edu. Registration is open now. The fall semester at LIU Post begins Wednesday, Sept. 4.
