Since he was 5 years old, Billy Achnitz had an interest in recycling. He would remind his mother to keep cans and bottles separate from the trash, and made sure they made it out to the curb for pick-up.
“I learned early on from my mother the difference between a recycling truck and the regular garbage truck, and the importance of conservation,” he said.
Now, the 23-year-old Mastic, N.Y., resident is pursuing his passion to promote a green society as a graduate student in the new M.S. in Environmental Sustainability program at LIU Post in Brookville.
Achnitz, as co-coordinator of the LIU Post Recycling Program and Graduate Assistant for Sustainability at LIU Post. Under his care, the campus recycles more than 100,000 pounds of materials each year. His goal is to open a green business, pairing the knowledge he is gaining from the M.S. in Environmental Sustainability with his bachelor’s degree in accountancy and finance, also from LIU Post.
Environmental sustainability is one of the nation’s fastest-growing fields. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the rate of job growth for environmental scientists and specialists will increase by 28 percent – much faster than the average for all occupations – over the next decade.
The 33-credit Master of Science in Environmental Sustainability, the only degree of its kind on Long Island, is offered in a blended format – part classroom, part online – affording students flexibility and convenience. The program is designed to educate and train professionals to develop environmentally sustainable solutions for society via multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary coursework integrating the physical and social sciences.
The program centers on issues specific to the Long Island/New York metropolitan region while also considering the global context. Students in the Environmental Sustainability program will investigate the region’s diverse systems of natural environments and built infrastructures.
Courses in the program include Principles of Environmental Sustainability, Sustainable Land Use and Transportation, Sustainable Energy Systems, Global Climate Change, and Oceans, Coasts, Sustainability.
