Brookville, N.Y. – Opportunities exist for students to help the LIU Post Center for Community Inclusion improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities this summer.
In June, the CCI will team up with iCan Shine, a nonprofit organization that teaches children with disabilities to ride conventional two-wheel bicycles through its iCan Bike program. Formerly known as Lose the Training Wheels, this program has been offered by CCI several times in recent years.
Volunteers age 16 and up are needed to provide physical, emotional and motivational support as the children progress to the point where they can ride on their own. The work involves some jogging and light running.
In July, the CCI will be supporting children with disabilities at the LIU Post summer camp giving them a chance to have a wonderful recreation experience alongside their typical peers. College-age volunteers are needed to:
- Shadow children with Down Syndrome and autism, including swimming
- Conduct applied behavior analytic (ABA) interventions
The program will run July 8-12 and 15-20. There will be a training session from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 26.
To volunteer for either program, contact the CCI at (516) 299-3812 or Post-CCI@liu.edu . To learn more about the CCI, visit www.liu.edu/post/cci.
