Brookville, N.Y. -- George Haralampoudis of Brookville, a champion of ongoing education for retirees, will receive the Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Service at the 54th Commencement exercises at LIU Post on Friday, May 4.
Since moving from Queens to Brookville a decade ago, Haralampoudis has become an active member of the LIU Post campus community and serves on the board of the Hutton House Lecture Series, which hosts a schedule of lectures and classes on current events, literature, the arts and history for community residents.
A retired restaurant supply company executive, Haralampoudis also shares his business acumen with international students in LIU Post's Global Connections Mentoring Program, and has contributed to campus projects such as the development of the Community Arboretum, the Rose Arbor restoration project and the production of "Hillwood: The Long Island Estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post," a book chronicling the stately home at the heart of the campus.
Haralampoudis is the first recipient of the Chancellor's Award who is not a faculty member or administrator at Long Island University. The award was established in 2006 by Theresa Mall Mullarkey, chancellor of LIU Post and a trustee of the university.
Haralampoudis was born in Patterson, N.J. and grew up in New York. He graduated from LIU Brooklyn with a bachelor's degree in business in 1956. Upon relocating from Flushing to Brookville 10 years ago, he became actively engaged in the cultural resources afforded to local residents as part of the campus community, most notably the Hutton House Lecture Series. He enrolls in the new courses offered each season, and derives much satisfaction from expanding his knowledge of such topics as literature, political science and history.
Haralampoudis and his wife, Aristea (known to her friends and loved ones as Tula) are members of the Church of the Holy Resurrection in Brookville and the Saint Demetrios Church in Jamaica, Queens. Along with their two sons, they have eight grandchildren. Mr. Haralampoudis enjoys sailing on the Long Island Sound and travel.
