88.1 WCWP to Hold First Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
Rita Langdon,Associate Provost and Director of Public Relations
Long Island University
The first annual WCWP Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 26 at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post (formerly known as the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.) The event will be hosted by WBAB radio personality and LIU Post alumnus Roger Luce, Class of 1985. Founded in the spring of 1960, WCWP 88.1 FM is the campus radio station of LIU Post, serving the North Shore of Long Island.
This year's Hall of Fame inductees include: Arthur Beltrone, station founder; Hank Neimark, station founder; the late Professor Virgil Jackson Lee, WCWP's first faculty advisor; and the late Dr. Herb Coston, builder of the Abrams Communication Center and champion of our FM signal.
When WCWP first signed on it was a closed-circuit radio station providing entertainment and information for the campus community. After operating for two years, plans were made to extend WCWP's services to the Long Island community through the facilities of a noncommercial, educational FM station operating from the LIU Post campus.
WCWP has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception. In September 1999, WCWP's Internet radio station, mywcwp.org, began operating, followed by WCWPSports.org, an all-sports radio station bringing Pioneer athletics to the world, in the fall of 2009. Throughout its 50-year existence, WCWP has interviewed some of the biggest named in music and entertainment, given countless unknown artists their first radio play and was the first home of many students who have gone on to become successful in broadcast media.
WCWP 88.1 FM features music, news and public service programs on both the FM frequency and its Internet stations at http://www.wcwp.org and http://www.wcwpsports.org
