Brookville, N.Y. — More than 50 undergraduate and graduate accounting students from LIU Post (formerly known as the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University) are participating in Bethpage Federal Credit Union's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which offers free tax preparation assistance to low-to-moderate income individuals.
The program is available February 1 through April 11, 2012 at select Bethpage FCU branches, including Freeport, Hempstead, Massapequa, Elmont, Westbury, Roosevelt, Bay Shore, Farmingdale, Central Islip, Patchogue, West Babylon and Riverhead. Qualifying individuals with incomes of $49,000 and below are eligible to receive VITA services. The program is available Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons and is open to the public. Individuals do not need to be a member of Bethpage FCU.
LIU Post students receive extensive training and are IRS certified. Bethpage FCU works with students and provides them with supervised experience as part of their hands-on skills training.
"Student volunteers will gain tremendous experience and knowledge, improve their interpersonal, communication, and team building skills, and enhance their resume," said Associate Professor Christie Comunale, Ph.D., CPA, School of Professional Accountancy at LIU Post.
Bethpage FCU coordinates the largest VITA program on Long Island. Last year, Bethpage FCU successfully completed 1,295 VITA returns and an IRS total refund of nearly $1.8 million.
LIU Post (formerly known as the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University) established the first autonomous school of professional accountancy in the nation in 1974. The school offers bachelor's and master's degree in accountancy and taxation, including 5-year combined undergraduate and graduate programs and online graduate courses.
