Rita Langdon,Associate Provost and Director of Public Relations & Marketing
Long Island University, LIU Post
In a ceremony held May 3, 2012 at the Marriott Hotel in Melville N.Y., Dr. Mary L. Westermann was honored with the Library Directory Associates Award (LDA), Long Island's highest honor in librarianship.
An associate professor of library and information science at LIU Post (formerly the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University), Dr. Westermann's specialties include consumer health information, health information on the world wide web and evaluating health information on the Internet.
In bestowing the award on her, Arthur Friedman of the Long Island Library Resources Council (LILRC) cited Dr. Westermann for her "extraordinarily passion for teaching and sharing, equally at home in the formal setting of a classroom, or at a reference desk, or on the floor of an active library."
Dr. Westermann has served on the boards of the Medical Library Association, the Special Libraries Association, The Catholic Library Association, the Long Island Library Resources Council and the Nassau County Library Association.
Formerly a director in the Nassau County library system, she is credited with work that led to the creation of a Consumer Health information clearinghouse as well as a series of annual lectures co-sponsored with the Nassau County Library Association on a variety of health related topics.
Her past honors include the Murray Gottlieb Award from the Medical Library association, the Jackson Turner Main Award from SUNY Stony Brook, the Beta Phi Mu Award Golden Anniversary Award, the David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence from LIU, as well as awards from the Palmer School's Alumni Association and the Catholic Library Association. Westermann is also a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
The LDA award was created 35 years ago to call attention to the importance of libraries and those who provide a special value to the libraries of Long Island. Each year a recipient is selected from nominations solicited in Nassau and Suffolk counties by a bi-county award committee. The 2012 committee was co-chaired by Paul Bornstein of the Lindenhurst Memorial Library and Laura Hoffman of the Levittown Public Library.
In winning the award Dr. Westermann follows a family tradition -- her father, the late Arthur Louis Morse, was recipient of an LDA Award for Excellence in Library Achievement in 1982.
"Thirty years ago I sat as a fledgling librarian and gazed with amazement as my father rose to the podium to receive the LDA Award," she told the audience at the Marriott. "When we got in the car, I said asked him how is it you can be so loved in the profession, and touched so many lives. He said to me, Mary, there's only one thing that this is all about. It's all about giving."
