New Writing Minor Launches at LIU Post
Rita Langdon,Associate Provost and Director of Public Relations & Marketing
Long Island University, LIU Post
The English Department at LIU Post will offer a minor in writing to all undergraduates at its Brookville campus beginning this fall.
Designed to fit with any major, the minor in writing will help undergraduates with acquiring basic knowledge of grammar, sentence structure, syntax, morphology, and phonology of the English language. It will also focus on cultivating students' ability to understand the nuances of texts; generate cogent analytical concepts; and enhance their skills in the creation of organized, clearly written analyses.
The minor, which is 21-credits, will allow students to choose from a wide range of core classes in such areas as Creative Writing, Advanced Writing, Rhetoric, Theories of Persuasion, Expository Writing, the Logic of Conversation and Literature. Literature electives will be applicable to the writing minor.
Students also will be able to take writing courses specific to the pedagogy of their major – such as Writing in Business, Writing and Healing, and a more general Introduction to Theories of Composing and Writing Pedagogy.
"This program will provide skills that will strengthen the writing abilities of any majors," notes Dr. John Lutz, chairman of the Department of English. "It offers a competitive edge in the job market by providing students with additional skills and enhanced knowledge in another field of study."
