September 17, 1787 marked a seminal event in America’s history – the signing of the U.S. Constitution. On Friday September 17, 2010, the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University will celebrate the signing of the U.S. Constitution with a variety of Constitution-themed programs and events throughout campus.
Voter Registration and U.S. Constitution Information will be available in Hillwood Commons and the Pratt Recreation Center Lobby from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students, faculty and staff will also be able to test their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution with a “Constitution Knowledge Contest” at both locations. Several screenings of “A More Perfect Union” will be provided from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Hillwood Cinema. In addition, an exhibit titled “The United States Constitution and the Founding Fathers” will be on display in the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library from September 15 to October 1.
Since 2004, the Division of Student Affairs Constitution Day Committee, in conjunction with a host of partners throughout the campus, have hosted a series of interactive activities and programs that showcase the history of the document, its purpose, and its guiding principles that continue to provide insight to our society.
“The founding fathers provided a young and struggling nation with a framework that remains as important today as it did when first created and later ratified,” said Adam Grohman, Chair of the Division of Student Affairs Constitution Day Committee. “Understanding this document and its various tenets provides our society with a broader understanding and, hopefully, will inspire our current and future generations to continue to preserve and uphold its principles.”
