Brookville, NY -- The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is hosting a variety of events throughout the week of November 8 to honor our veteran students, faculty, staff, and community members.

The week will begin with Daniel Murphy, father of Medal of Honor recipient Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who will speak about his son’s life and service in the U.S. Navy, Monday, November 8, 1 p.m., in the Hillwood Cinema.

Long Island native Lt. Michael Murphy was Officer in charge of a four man SEAL team in 2005 when they were ambushed by anti-coalition militia. Aware of the consequences, Lt. Murphy exposed himself to the enemy to make a satellite radio call for aid, sacrificing his own life. Lt. Murphy was awarded (posthumously) the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award, by President George W. Bush.

Motivational speaker and wounded veteran from the Fighting 69th Battalion, Sam Cila, will speak about his experiences in Iraq on Tuesday, November 9, 7 p.m., in the Hillwood Lecture Hall. Cila, another Long Island native, was injured by a roadside IED bomb in 2005 and had his left hand amputated in 2008 due to injuries sustained in battle. Cila, whose lecture will center on the theme of “overcoming adversity,” now competes in Iron Man competitions around the world.

Wednesday, November 10, a lecture, “Women in the Military,” will take place at 6 p.m., in the Hillwood Cinema. Light Refreshments will be served.

Thursday, November 11, C.W. Post will host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 12:45 p.m. at the Flagpole outside Hillwood Commons. Stephen Siwulec, President of the C.W. Post Club Veterans and Students United and Northeast Regional Director of Student Veterans of America, will serve as guest speaker of the event. Refreshments will be served at the Top of the Commons after the ceremony.

Friday, November 12, Veterans and Students United will join forces with MRAW & WARM (Men Respecting All Women & Women Appreciating Real Men) to present a concert by alternative rock band Lights Resolve with an open mic night opening the concert, 8 p.m. Students who wish to perform in the open mic night must register between 8 and 8:30 p.m. the evening of the event. Food will be served. All donations for this event go toward the Wounded Warrior Project.

The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is located at 720 Northern Blvd., Brookville, NY. For more information regarding veteran services and events at C.W.
