The lecture, presented by the curator Virginia Creighton, will explore the works and inspirations of the Abstractionist Joe Overstreet, whose paintings will be on exhibit in the Hutchins Gallery. Both African American and Native American by descent, Overstreet was born in 1933 in Conehatta, Mississippi, an unincorporated area midway between Meridian and Jackson. Following high school he joined the Merchant Marines where the element water was to spark his artistic vision. The lecture will look at his journey, influences, and strengths within personal, historical, and religious contexts, and attempt to see his art as a physical transformation of what he has witnessed.
