Resident Helpful Information
Room and Board Clearance:
Payment for room and board (meal plan) should be made directly to the Bursar's Office. Residents will not be permitted to check-in nor have their meal card activated until these fees are paid or deferred against financial aid/scholarships.
Please check-in only during your designated times. When checking-in be sure to follow these steps:
- You will be asked to complete and sign: Registration Form, Housing Contract, Renter’s Insurance Acknowledgement form, and sign your Code of Conduct Acknowledgement form
- Your LIU ID card will act as your room key. It will be encoded with a 4 digit pin of your choosing. For those residents who do not have a LIU ID card at check-in, we will provide you with a temporary keycard that will be valid for 2 days. You will need to return your temporary key card before your LIU ID card is encoded for your room.
- When you have completed the necessary paper work, be sure that you receive: A copy of your Housing Contract, Student Code of Conduct booklet, Mailbox Combination Card, and Students Rights & Responsibilities booklet.
Campus Dining/Carte Blanche Plan:
All students who live on campus are required to be enrolled in one the Meal Plan options. All Conolly Residents who do not reside in an apartment are billed for the Carte Blanche Program. Residents living in apartment spaces or the Hoyt Street Residence Hall are billed for the declining dollars only meal plan. Request for an exemption to the meal plans cannot be honored.
Cable TV, Internet, & Wireless:
Long Island University provides free internet, wireless, and cable television services in the Residence Halls. These services are active in your room and can be accessed by plugging your television cable cord into the appropriate technology box in your room. There is only one cable jack per room. You and your roommates will be able to share this jack by simply bringing a splitter that allows you to plug in up to three cables into the cable outlet. The outlet has two additional jacks for data communications services. High Speed Internet Service is also provided free of charge. Residents who have laptops may gain access to the LIU wireless network by simply inputting their MYLIU username and password. Cable television service is free in the Residence Hall.
Linens & Laundry:
Residents must furnish their own linen, towels, and pillows. All residence hall mattresses are sized Extra Long Twin. Our campus also works with Residence Hall Linen Company. Students can order linen in advance and have it delivered to the residence hall prior to their arrival. You are welcomed to visit: www.rhl.org/lib or contact them via phone at 1-800-957-4338 for more information. Inexpensive card operated washers and dryers are located on the lower level. You may obtain and add money on your laundry card by using the machine located in the lobby of Richard L. Conolly Residence hall.
Insurance (Health & Renter’s) Information:
Health Insurance is mandatory for all residential students. You will be automatically billed for Health Insurance. As an added convenience, you will be able to waive your health insurance online if you are already covered under another health insurance plan. You may simply register your health insurance coverage through the LIU Bursar’s Office website link. You will receive a separate letter and brochure about The University Health Insurance plans and benefits.
Renter’s Insurance is available at moderate rates through several companies. We recommend that you first check with your parents’ homeowner policy for possible coverage. Information on a policy will be provided in your housing packet or you can visit: www.nssinc.com All residents at check-in must sign a Renter’s Insurance Acknowledgement form. This form declares that you understand that the university is not liable for loss or damage personal property and that it is your responsibility to seek appropriate coverage if you desire.
All residents have their own digital safe in their rooms. You choose the security code that opens your safe.
On campus parking is currently not available for residential students due to limited space. Fortunately, the Brooklyn campus is accessible to all New York City Transportation. All train lines for Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens stop just outside the campus gates. The Long Island Railroad and airport bus terminal are ¼ mile walk from the campus.
ALL STUDENTS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO READ THROUGHLY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE HOUSING CONTRACT AND RESIDENT HANDBOOK, WHICH IS GIVEN TO RESIDENTS UPON CHECK-IN. SHOULD YOU REQUIRE A COPY, YOU MAY OBTAIN ONE AT THE RESIDENCE LIFE MAIN OFFICE. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR UPHOLDING ALL TERMS OF THE RESIDENCE HALL CONTRACT AND POLICIES. VIOLATIONS MAY LEAD TO DISMISSAL FROM UNIVERSITY HOUSING.
HELPFUL ITEMS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR PACKING CHECK-LIST:
Alarm Clock, desk lamp, desk supplies, first aid supplies, flashlight, iron, laundry bag, laundry soap, power strips/surge protectors, pillows, radio, toiletries, and umbrella.
PROHIBITED FIRE SAFETY & HEALTH CODES ITEMS:
Extension Cords (only power strips allowed), candles, air conditioners, coffee pots, electric frying pans, any open heating devices/appliances, heaters, hot plates, hot pots, incense, pets, toasters, toaster ovens, grills, microwaves, water beds, and outside furniture (sofas, lounge chairs, etc).
WORK ORDER SYSTEM
for your convenience the college has an online work order system. Using your LIU Email log in, you will provide the same credentials to submit and monitor work orders that are needed to fix and address concerns in your living area.
