Healthy Living for Older Adults
An outreach initiative for Fort Greene residents as well as for individuals living in other neighborhoods surrounding the Campus, this 10-week program provides health education services to senior citizens.
The program meets once a week, during the fall and the spring semesters with sessions offered either in the morning or in the afternoon. Each term, the educational component of the program is assessed and adjusted to meet the needs of the population it serves. The atmosphere is warm and professional. Clients feel free to discuss issues that affect their lives. They form friendships with the students and with other clients. To maintain an ongoing relationship with the clients, senior-nursing students supervised by faculty members, work with small groups (usually one student to 2-3 clients). They see their clients one on one, and provide health assessments and medication reviews. In a group, the students take turns leading the clients in light exercise and meditation. A healthy snack is provided to participants.
The next session will start February 4, 2010. Advance registration is necessary.
