Application Process

All applicants can submit their application for admissions while they are in the final stage of the completion of their prerequisite courses. All prerequisites must be completed prior to entering the professional phase of the program. We encourage students to meet with faculty members and administrators in the Department of Occupational Therapy to prepare their application and to make sure that prerequisites are completed.

Application process: Step-by-Step

1. The Long Island University Application for Admission or OTCAS

Apply through the OTCAS system using the following link: www.OTCAS.org. Follow the instructions provided in the system about the submission of personal statements, official transcripts and letters of recommendation. Once your application in the system is complete we will be able to schedule your interview.

Apply directly to LIU Brooklyn. Please apply online at My LIU or use the Apply Now link in the top navigation bar. For more information on the admissions process, visit the Office of Admissions Web site. If you decide to apply directly to LIU you need to follow also the steps 2-7 to complete the process.

2. Occupational Therapy Specific Admissions Application

Submit your Occupational Therapy application at the following address:

Admission applications and reference letter forms can be obtained from the OT Department (5th Floor, Health Science Building, Room 512, 718-780-4508, ext. 1).

3. Personal Statement

You need to submit a personal statement (limit: 2 pages). In your personal statement, explain your career goals, your interest in occupational therapy, past work/volunteer experience that is relevant, and if there is a specialized area of occupational therapy that interests you most. You may also wish to describe your experience with illness and disability—whether the experience is your own or that of a family member or close friend.

4. Official Transcript(s)

Candidates need to submit official transcripts of their course work. The transcripts can be sent to:

5. Letters of Recommendation

Three (3) letters of recommendation on departmental reference letter forms are required. These recommendations should be provided by individuals who can comment on any of the following areas: the applicant’s academic background, volunteer or community service, professional experience. The person completing the recommendation form MUST return it to you in a sealed envelope with his or her signature across the flap of the envelope. Submit your letters at the following address:

6. Interview

Students who have completed the 5 steps above and meet the grade-point average requirements will be invited to the Department of Occupational Therapy for an interview with a faculty member so that they can become more familiar with the program and the Campus. During the interview, candidates will be asked to write a short essay answering a question pertaining to the field of occupational therapy.

7. Letter of Volunteer Hours

A minimum of 50 hours of volunteer work with a licensed occupational therapist is required. Candidates need to submit a letter from the occupational therapist or the facility confirming their volunteer work. You need to submit this letter prior to entering the program in the fall.
