Clubs & Events
Students in the English Club organize a variety of events, including outings to theatrical performances, film screenings, lectures, and readings, and presentations by potential employers. Once a year, we induct qualifying students into our chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honors society. The English Department hosts readings by established and emerging literary stars in the Voices of the Rainbow reading series, by distinguished Visiting Writers who teach in our Creative Writing MFA program, and by our own graduate students in the MFA Reading Series. For over thirty years, distinguished scholars and writers have come to campus to deliver the annual Paumanok Lecture on American literature and culture. Since 1992, our literary magazine -- Downtown Brooklyn -- has published poetry and literary prose by students, faculty, and staff from across campus. Every spring, the Department awards the Edelman Prizes to the best essays written in undergraduate English courses. These programs, and a variety of other occasional events, provides students with the valuable opportunity to meet and mingle with other students, faculty members, and guest speakers.
