Description

I was born in the Bronx in 1944 and began writing as a teenager. I have published over twenty-five books of poetry, fiction and autobiography. From 1966-1975 I co-edited Angel Hair Magazine and Books, and since 1975 I have been editor and publisher of United Artists Books. I have been a guest editor for The World, the literary magazine of the Poetry Project, and I’m presently a contributing editor to Zen Monster Magazine. My poems have appeared in three volumes of The Best American Poetry series, and in numerous other anthologies. I’ve taught at Queens College, Naropa University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, SUNY Albany and The New School. A double CD of a live reading of a book-length poem, The Origin of the World, appeared in 2004. I’v been teaching at Long Island University since 1984—initially as an adjunct instructor and presently as an Associate Professor in the English Department.
