He has been teaching graduate-level courses in general and applied linguistics and the methodology of teaching English as a second language since he joined the Brooklyn Campus faculty in 1988. He also has taught a number of courses in education. He chaired the Department of Teaching & Learning from 1996 to 2001.
Prior to joining the Long Island University faculty, Bains was on the faculty of John Jay College and Brooklyn College, where he principally taught writing and ESL to college freshmen. He also taught English in the U.K. system for nearly five years. Born and raised in India, he has been an immigrant twice, first in the U.K. and then in the U.S. His main research contributions are in the principles and parameters theory of language analysis and language acquisition. He also has a deep and personal interest in the language and cultural problems of all immigrant communities in New York City.
