Foreign Language Placement Examination


The Foreign Language Placement Examination evaluates a student's grammar and comprehension as well as reading and writing proficiency in Spanish, French, or Italian. Results will determine your language level skills and the corresponding course you may benefit from taking. The examination will consist of basic grammar and vocabulary questions and comprehension passages as well as short compositions in the language being evaluated. Placement scoring and results are entirely at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature.

What is the purpose of the examination?

The Examination is designed to measure students’ skills in Foreign Languages to determine the student language level. We administer examinations in French, Italian, and Spanish.

Who qualifies to take the examination?

Any student who speaks any of the above languages at home or has studied any of the languages for at least two years qualifies.

How long is the examination and when is it administered?

All students are permitted one hour for this examination. It is usually administered every Friday by appointment only. Please call the Testing Office to inquire 718-488-1392.

What should I bring to the examination?

Students should bring their LIU student ID number, a pen, pencil, and photo identification such as a school ID or a driver’s license.

Where and when can I get the results of my exam?

From the Foreign Language Department on the 4th Floor of the Humanities Building one week after the test date.

What is included in the examination?

For all examinations you must exhibit a moderate to advanced ability to read, write and understand the language.

The Language Placement exam is free of charge.
