Stars from Boardwalk Empire, Star Trek, and Blazing Saddles led the production of a trailer for a one-hour television series pilot written by the TV Writers Studio at LIU Brooklyn. Filming took place at Lorber Hall on the LIU Post campus on Jan. 15-16.
Notables included director Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek); executive producer and director of photography/faculty member Larry Banks (Juice); actor Kevin O’Rourke (Boardwalk Empire, The Aviator); and actor Steven Bogardus (original Broadway cast of Falsettos).
Speaking about the TV Writers Studio, founder Norman Steinberg (Blazing Saddles, My Favorite Year), explains: “This is not a program that talks about writing on the abstract or muses on how it should be done. It’s a day-by-day grind on how a television series actually gets done from conception to production with all of its challenges and imperfections.”
Newsday was also on hand to document the production.
More on the TV Writers Studio
Created by Emmy Award-winner and veteran screenwriter Norman Steinberg, the goal of the TV Writers Studio is to develop highly skilled, experienced professionals with strong portfolios who will be prepared to begin careers in the television industry as writers, creators, and leaders. A one-of-a-kind program that gives its students a real-world TV writing experience, students become part of an intensive, two-year curriculum of study. During this time, they function both collaboratively as the staff of an ongoing television series as well as independently as writer/creators of their own TV series pilot. Weekly classes are held at the state-of-the-art Steiner Studios, a 305,000-square-foot, Hollywood-style production and support facility in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard.
