Armen Kassabian will spend the year teaching English in Brazil

LIU Brooklyn Student Armen Kassabian winner of a 2013 Fulbright FellowshipBrooklyn, NY—Armen Kassabian still remembers the advice his middle school special education teacher gave him: “I think it would be best if you didn’t study a foreign language. It may be too overwhelming for you.” Ten years later, Armen is not only conversationally fluent in French, Armenian, Spanish and Haitian Creole, but is earning a M.S. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL, K-12) at LIU Brooklyn. He is also the recipient of a Fulbright English Teaching Fellowship in Brazil for 2014-2015.

The Fulbright Program is an international educational exchange program, sponsored by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Program operates in over 125 countries worldwide.

He describes himself as “energetic, compassionate and adventurous.” He’s an “avid traveler, biker, marathon runner, Ultimate Frisbee player, poet and blog writer of Armenian-American descent.” He’s previously taught English in a primary school for the French Board of Education in Martinique in 2012. He has also taught Yoga and Tai Chi to students in New York City and spearheaded a community garden project in Jerusalem. For the summer, he’s a crew leader in Baltimore, MD, teaching Outdoor Education to adolescents for the Student Conservation Corps.

His next stop? Armen will travel to Brazil as a Fulbright Fellow to teach English. He’s known to attract the attention of his students by teaching English with rhymes, hip hop influenced lessons and improvisational theatre activities. Upon completion of his degree. he sees himself “teaching in New York, internationally and is open to working for the United Nations or the U.S. State department,” where he can use his “diversity of experiences, passion for teaching, and sense of exploration to help meet the needs of the 21st century globalized workforce.”
