LIU Brooklyn Supports Providence House and More
Marcia Harrington, M.F.A.,Director of Public Relations
Among the many charitable works at LIU Brooklyn, two will especially brighten the holidays for people in need.
President’s Holiday Party/Toy Collection: At the Dec. 5, 2013, festive holiday breakfast gathering for staff and faculty at LIU Brooklyn, an assortment of toys, games, books, puzzles, and gift cards were donated to Providence House, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to transition women who are homeless, abused, or recently released from prison back into society. More than 14 boxes of donations were collected at the event and delivered to the charity the following week.
LIU Brooklyn’s relationship with Providence House began in the early 1980s with Dr. Barbara Witenko, then campus minister and Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) academic coordinator at LIU Brooklyn. Her relationship with Providence House as a sister of the order, resident, and eventual board member inspired the HEOP department’s active participation in the mission of the house. This year’s selection of Providence House continues this 30-year tradition.
President’s Holiday Party/Cards for Military: Also at the breakfast, holiday cards were provided to enable staff to send greetings to veterans, military families, and active-duty service members at hospitals and installations around the world through the American Red Cross. One hundred and twenty-four cards were sent with best wishes from LIU.
Thanksgiving “Give Thanks. Walk.” Event: Members of the LIU Brooklyn Professional & Personal Development Academy Committee were joined by Assistant Coach Johnny Hernandez and the LIU Blackbirds men’s baseball team in the annual St. Jude walk event over the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013. The group raised money to support research and the treatment of childhood cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
