'Pearl,' a Musical Drama Based on the Life of Legendary Singer and Actress Pearl Bailey, Runs May 3-5 at Kumble Theater

LIU Brooklyn Presents Pearl about the life of the legendary Pearl BaileyBrooklyn, N.Y. –The life of legendary singer and actress Pearl Bailey will be the subject of a musical drama at LIU Brooklyn’s Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts from May 3-5.

Presented in association with Suite Roots LLC, "Pearl" follows the influences and friendships that molded Bailey’s life and career, spanning the 1930s to the 1970s. The show is a musical journey into Bailey’s tribulations and triumphs, providing a glimpse into the humanity of a celebrity whose persona was larger than life.

“She became an ambassador under two presidents and was the first African- American woman to have her own network television show. We do our best to touch upon all these milestones in the script while entertaining the audience with her music and unmatched charm,” said CB Murray, writer, choreographer and nephew of the award-winning songstress. “She broke segregation barriers by marrying Uncle Louie in 1952,” said Murray. “‘Pearl’ is a very special project for me. It’s a part of my legacy.”

The cast features Brandon Cordeiro, Chris Karl, Thaddeus McCants, Baakari Wilder with Jennie Harney in the lead role. Ben Harney directs Pearl with musical direction from Charles Czarnecki.

"Pearl" will be presented Friday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 4, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, May 5, at 5 p.m. Tickets are $40; $30, students and seniors with ID. They can be purchased at the Kumble Theater box office at (718) 488-1624 or online at
