Brooklyn, N.Y. – LIU Brooklyn’s incoming class has its eye on the prize – the health professions prize, that is. Academic programs in nursing, pharmacy, biology and the health sciences are among the most popular for incoming freshmen and transfers, according to the admissions office of the downtown Brooklyn institution.
To be sure, healthcare jobs are the bright spot on the employment front. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that millions of new healthcare jobs will be added over the next decade.
But for LIU Brooklyn students, this interest is more than just about jobs.
“Our students are all about making a positive difference in the world and in the lives of people in their communities,” said Gale Stevens Haynes, provost of LIU Brooklyn. “They come to LIU Brooklyn to discover their full potential, and as our motto says, they come to us to “Find Out How Good You Really Are.”
LIU Brooklyn, one of the largest educational institutions in the downtown Brooklyn area, offers more than 200 top-of-the-line undergraduate and graduate programs, in fields as diverse as business, education and the liberal arts and sciences as well as nursing, pharmacy and the health professions. More than 1,500 freshmen and transfers are enrolled in classes this fall.
“We are very proud of our incoming class,” said Alexander Scott, dean of enrollment, at LIU Brooklyn’s Office of Admissions. “This class features a very diverse cross-section of our society, with students from 26 states and 12 foreign countries who represent a wide array of ethnic and culturally diverse groups.”
Scott added, “We have found an overall strengthening of the academic indexes of those students who have applied and been admitted to LIU Brooklyn, in terms of increases in average SATs and G.P.A.s.”
The campus has seen an almost 15% increase in applications over the previous year, according to the admissions office, with the average G.P.A. of admitted freshmen increasing from 82.5% to 85.3%.
Among recent highlights, LIU Brooklyn has formed a multilayered partnership with the Barclays Center, the sports and entertainment arena. The collaboration will include athletics, education and community activities. The LIU Blackbirds team, which advanced to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship the last two seasons, will play at least four home games each season at this venue, with the first contest on Nov. 9.
