Brooklyn, N.Y. - “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” has adopted the Long Island University Blackbirds as the talk show’s “NCAA tournament team.” The talk show host announced Tuesday night that he is pulling for the Blackbirds to go all the way in the 2011’s March Madness.

The Blackbirds take on North Carolina at 7:15 p.m. Friday in Charlotte, N.C. “Late Night,” which airs weeknights at 12:30 a.m. on NBC immediately following “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” will continue to feature Long Island University’s men’s basketball team leading up to Friday’s big game.

“We’re finally ready to reveal the team that we’re supporting this year,” Fallon told his studio audience of hundreds and a television audience of millions Tuesday night. “The Long Island University-Brooklyn Blackbirds!” Holding up a card with the “LIU” emblem to television cameras, Fallon revved up Blackbird support from the enthusiastic studio audience at NBC in Manhattan.

“We just love underdogs here. And with the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds, we found a great underdog in our own backyard,” Fallon exclaimed.

“They’re one the great teams of the NEC conference. They’re 27-5. And they have an amazing coach in Jim Ferry,” he said, before looking into the camera, holding up a white Long Island University T-shirt and imploring the audience to “Help us cheer on the underdogs — the LIU Blackbirds — to victory!”

During his monologue in the show’s opening minute, Fallon set the tone with a “March Madness” quip about Charlie Sheen. He made the announcement about LIU six minutes into the broadcast.
