Mayor John Lindsay opposed the proposed sale of the Brooklyn Campus to the City University of New York in 1968, voicing his support for maintaining the Campus as a private institution, citing it as a “growing resource in our city.”

In 1972, the administration and the Brooklyn Campus faculty completed the first collectively bargained faculty agreement at a private university in the United States.

University President David J. Steinberg (center), a Harvard-educated historian and noted Southeast Asia scholar, celebrated his 1985 inauguration at the Brooklyn Campus, leading a parade through downtown Brooklyn.

Completed in 1995, the Zeckendorf Health Sciences Center houses facilities for programs in nursing, pharmacy and health sciences.

In 2001, an abandoned MTA substation gave way to a gleaming tower of education, the Jeanette and Edmund T. Pratt Jr. Center for Academic Studies.

The men’s basketball program reached the 1,000-victory mark in 2001—another milestone in its proud history, which includes three Division I NCAA tournament appearances, two NIT championships and two undefeated seasons.

The $45-million Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center, which opened in 2006, features top-notch athletic facilities and fitness equipment; offers health services for the Campus and the surrounding community; and provides hands-on learning opportunities for students.

Opened in 2007, the Louise B’69 and Leonard B. Riggio Cyber Café is a high-tech hot spot where students and faculty members can meet and eat.
