Located in the heart of downtown Brooklyn’s dynamic Tech Triangle and Cultural District, LIU Brooklyn is home to over 60,000 alumni.
Situated on Long Island’s idyllic Gold Coast, LIU Post is home to over 120,000 alumni; offers more than 200 academic programs; is ranked a "Best Regional University" by U.S. News and World Report; features world-class faculty; hosts 22 athletic teams; and is home to the nation’s first School of Professional Accountancy, and the renowned Tilles Center for Performing Arts.
From 1921 to 1951, the campus was the home of Post Cereal Company heiress and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post. The estate’s lavish Tudor-revival mansion was a symbol of wealth and social prominence that embraced Long Island’s Gold Coast in the early 20th century. Like Jay Gatsby’s West Egg manse, Hillwood was an idyllic country retreat for family and friends of Ms. Post and her second husband, financial wizard E.F. Hutton, to escape the noise and crowds of New York City. Tennis, horseback riding, swimming, and golf, not to mention opulent parties frequented by royalty, world ambassadors, and celebrities, were just a few of the favorite pastimes that guests enjoyed on the estate.
Long Island University's unique and innovative private/public partnership with Suffolk County Community College was the vision of Dr. Joseph Shenker, an esteemed higher education administrator who was the founding president of LaGuardia Community College and later provost of Long Island University's C.W. Post, Brentwood and Rockland campuses, and ultimately LIU Riverhead. With Dr. Shenker's untimely passing on September 20, 2008, he never saw his vision for the undergraduate educational partnership between LIU Riverhead and Suffolk County Community College come to be. However, no one will ever forget Dr. Shenker's continuous emphatic proclamation, “Riverhead is a winner!”
The location was officially dedicated at a ceremony on November 30, 2006. Officials in attendance were Dr. Shirley Robinson Pippins, president of Suffolk County Community College; Edward Travaglianti, chairman of the board, Long Island University; David J. Steinberg, president of Long Island University; Dr. Joseph Shenker, provost of the C.W. Post Campus, Brentwood Campus, Rockland Graduate Campus and LIU Riverhead; Angelo Mangia, trustee, Long Island University; Theresa Mall Mullarkey, chancellor of the C.W. Post Campus and a trustee of Long Island University; and Edward Shorin, chancellor of LIU Riverhead and the Brentwood Campus of Long Island University; and Ed Romaine, Suffolk County Legislator.
On September 1st, 2011, LIU Hudson cut ribbons at its campuses in Rockland and Westchester Counties. The campus located in Purchase, NY, along with the educational center at West Point, NY and the extension site in Suffern, NY are within easy reach of millions of residents of the tri-state area. LIU Hudson, the result of the recent merger of our graduate campuses in Rockland and Westchester and of our West Point educational site.
Southampton College, the easternmost campus of Long Island University, opened with great promise in 1963 and closed in 2005. Located in an idyllic environmental setting on the Atlantic shore of Long Island, it had a nationally recognized marine science program that produced an unprecedented number of Fulbright awards and an impressive number of alumni who went on to careers in prestigious universities and research centers.
An immersive international program with more than 3,000 alumni that offers opportunities in eight different countries, LIU Global (formerly Friends World) is the only college in the world that combines full-time immersion into foreign countries and cultures, field study, internships, and community service for one-of-a-kind education.
After a year of planning, a group of alumni - including graduates, former visiting students, and “dropout keeps” - came together in Brooklyn to celebrate fifty years of Friends World Institute, Friends World College, Friends World Program, Global College, and LIU Global.
Since the 50th anniversary in 2015, a group of alumni continued the conversation around building our alumni community and made progress towards establishing a formal Alumni Association. In August 2017, bylaws were finalized for the creation of the LIU Global Alumni Association in support of the alumni community of Friends World, Global College, and LIU Global. These included guidelines for the governance of the Association, including establishing a Board of Directors and, in Fall 2017, an interim Board was elected to launch the Association.
Looking forward, the Board’s priorities for 2018 include the historical archives, developing and executing a communications strategy, and initiating programming to connect alumni with current students. The interim Board will have two-year terms; this will enable it to make solid progress before electing new members.
