University Faculty Orientation
At the beginning of each new academic year, the Office of Academic Affairs sponsors the University Faculty Orientation for new, full-time faculty members at all Long Island University campuses. This one-day event is designed to introduce new faculty members to the broader academic community and to provide an overview of the resources available to support their teaching and scholarship at the University.
The day begins with a luncheon attended by the new faculty members and their respective deans, followed by welcoming remarks from President David J. Steinberg and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jeffrey Kane. Presentations are made by members of the University Teaching & Learning Initiative (TLI), the Office of Sponsored Research and the Office of Human Resources.
One of the highlights of the program is a presentation by previous recipients of the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching (the University's highest teaching award) entitled, "Reflections on Teaching." During the presentation, faculty members share personal teaching experiences at Long Island University.
At the conclusion of the program, the deans introduce all of the new faculty members in their respective schools/colleges. The event is traditionally held at the C.W. Post Campus so that new faculty members may visit McGrath House, the residence of President Steinberg and his wife, Joan, who graciously host a wine and cheese reception for the participants at the end of the day.
