LIU Pharmacy Dean Dr. John Pezzuto to Lead Health and Research Initiative

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb 02, 2017) – Long Island University announced the launch of the LIU Health Research Initiative, a visionary interdisciplinary initiative to be led by Dr. John M. Pezzuto, one of the University’s most decorated scholars and researchers.  Dr. Pezzuto was appointed Vice President of LIU Health and Research by LIU’s Board of Trustees on January 24.

Dr. Pezzuto, a world-renowned researcher, is the 2014 recipient of the Volwiler Research Award by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. His current research interests are predominantly in the areas of biology-driven natural product drug discovery and characterization, with primary emphasis in the fields of cancer chemotherapy and cancer chemoprevention. Dr. Pezzuto is widely known for identifying the cancer-prevention aspects of resveratrol, a chemical derived from grapes and grape products.  He is the author of more than 700 publications, with an h-index of 90, has been cited more than 37,000 times, is the co-inventor of several patents, editor of five books, and a member of over 10 editorial boards of international journals.

“Dr. Pezzuto’s leadership, will bring our extraordinary faculty together to collaborate on impactful interdisciplinary research through the LIU Health Research initiative,” said Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, President of LIU. “This research will elevate the University’s reputation as a research-oriented institution, while creating transformational benefits in our local communities and around the world.”

In his expanded role, Dr. Pezzuto will provide leadership in defining the University’s research agenda, inter-professional programs, external affiliations and joint collaborative activities across all of LIU’s flourishing Health Professions programs, while continuing to serve as the Dean of the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The LIU Health Research Initiative will provide an opportunity for students and faculty among the multitude of Health Professions programs at both campuses to take part in cutting-edge research while exploring health and science based career paths geared to advance health and medicine around the world.
