LIU Post PioneersBROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2016) - On Thursday, Director of Athletics and Recreation Bryan Collins announced that LIU Post will be adding women's rugby as a club sport in the 2016-17 academic year.

"We are always looking to increase opportunities for our students at LIU Post, and women's rugby is an emerging sport," Collins stated . "Our intention is to start this as a club sport in 2016-17, with the plan of moving it to varsity status the year after. The popularity and awareness of the sport is growing. We feel that we will be a very competitive program in a short period of time."

The Pioneers will be led by John Royal, who previously served as head coach of the Hofstra University men's club rugby team. He is also the founder and head coach of the Long Island Rugby Club, and has worked with USA Rugby. Royal encompasses 45 years of rugby experience as a player and coach in the United States and New Zealand.

"I am thrilled that we are starting women's rugby at LIU Post, thus giving our female population another avenue to compete," said Senior Associate Director of Recreational Sports Rick Hamilton. "Being involved with starting a program is always exciting and we feel that there is a lot of potential for this sport. We already have a great group of women involved, and they are working relentlessly to learn the finer points of the game. We all look forward to a successful season in 2016-17."

"Rugby is a game for these young women to play and enjoy," Royal commented. "Each and every one of these student-athletes can be proud to announce to their family and friends that they are rugby players at LIU Post."

Royal later added: "But, what is most important is when they look at themselves in the mirror, they can be proud of their own personal achievements, both on and off the rugby field."

From Our Student-Athletes:
"I think that women's rugby is one of the best clubs I have ever joined at LIU Post. I think the school had the best interest in the students when considering this type of activity. I had every intention of joining a sport where I could have a voice, and be a part of of a group that works together. Ever since we started, my expectations have been exceeded. It is a great experience." - Sydney Duffy

"I think it is a great idea to expand women's sports here on campus. Rugby is a combination of sports and it is exciting that they are allowing all skill levels to partake in the program. I cannot wait until we really start getting into things." - Taylor Hill

"Being part of the new women's rugby team at LIU Post makes me very excited as an international student. I have the opportunity to make a difference by starting something different. I look forward to being part of the team." - Karen Chayban
